“Plays are about change. Big play, big change. Little play, even bigger change.”
Plays are about change. Big play, big change. Little play, even bigger change. And make it fast.
When asked to write a one-minute play, my first thought was: “How can I show any change in that amount of time?”
Then I realized that even in the biggest plays (as in life), change is often less than a minute long. In fact, it’s usually just an instant. So, just show that one instant.
In my play Secret, a woman accuses her newly moved-in boyfriend of using her deodorant. Which he is. But so is someone else, it seems.
In my other play We’re Those People, two new parents are horrified to discover they’re no longer hip. All the babysitter did was call them “Mr.” and “Mrs.”
Simple, straight-forward, a split-second. But it changes everything.
